Mobile research clinic takes health studies directly into communities across Northern Ireland
Published September 17, 2026
The Western Health and Social Care Trust has launched Northern Ireland’s first Mobile Health Research Service, taking health research directly into rural, socioeconomically deprived, and underserved communities.
Operating under the banners “Wheels in Motion, Research in Action” and “On the Road to Better Health”, the specially designed mobile unit takes clinical trials out of traditional hospital settings and into local town squares, community hubs, and workplaces. Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Research Equity at the University of Oxford and shaped through extensive Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE), the service removes geographical and practical barriers to participation.
This initiative ensures research reflects diverse communities across Northern Ireland, supporting accessible and representative trial delivery across the region.
